2016 Estate Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc

The Estate Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is a denser, richer more tropical version of Sauvignon Blanc than one would generally find in the universe of this grape. Along with the denser textural aspects of the wine the fruit is buffered by the same soil characteristics that make our Estate Vineyard Old Vine Pinot Noir unique. That specific characteristic is the natural proclivity of the older vines to pick up on the inherent minerality in the soil and water on the property. This underlying tone offsets Sauvignon Blanc’s general fruit driven tone making for a wine with both rich high fruit tones and crystalline notes that fill out the back of the wine. The old vine fruit was picked toward the end of September in perfect condition. It was immediately pressed, allowed to settle, racked and inoculated with a yeast specifically designed for aromatic white wines. The wine was fermented and bottled after about six months prior to malolactic fermentation beginning. Due to this the wine was sterile filter prior to bottling.

For those that have followed this winery over the years and gotten into some of the “special” projects we have concocted over the years you may recognize a touch of the flavor and texture profile from the near mythical “Panama White” bottling from lo the many years ago. If you do than feel free to give yourself a gold star for palate recognition.

VINOUS 91 Points: PATRICIA GREEN Estate Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2016. Light bright yellow. Ripe pear, Meyer lemon and smoky minerals on the nose, along with hints of jasmine and fennel. Silky, seamless and nicely concentrated, offering energetic citrus and orchard fruit flavors with sweet butter and a sexy honeysuckle flourish. The floral note carries through a very long, subtly sweet finish that's sharpened by a jolt of tangy acidity. -- Josh Raynolds

2016 Dry Muscat Ottonel

Muscat Ottonel  is a white wine grape variety that is a member of the Muscat family. It is most notable for its use in dessert wines from Austria, Romania, Croatia and Serbia as well as dry wines from Alsace and Hungary. We have produced this exotic varietal in a bone-dry style showcasing its elegance and fragrance of pear blossoms and white flowers. This is generally a lower acid grape and while it is far from high in acid it has a nice lift and snap to it that makes for a refreshing, almost thirst-quenching sort of beverage.

VINOUS 90 Points: PATRICIA GREEN Dry Muscat Ottonel Oak Grove Vineyard 2016. Pale gold. Pear skin, lemon peel and fennel aromas show good depth and a zesty note of candied ginger. Silky and dry in the mouth, offering fresh orchard and citrus fruit flavors plus suggestions of vanilla and honeysuckle. Finishes tangy and firm, with an echoing floral note hanging on nicely. -- Josh Raynolds

2016 Willamette Valley Sauvignon Blanc

The Willamette bottling consists of fruit planted in 2001 and 2002 in our Estate Vineyard, fruit from Oak Grove Vineyard in the Eola-Amity AVA and fruit from Oster Vineyard east of Mt. Angel. This is brightly fruited Sauvignon Blanc leaning to the tropical side of things. There is a smooth mouthfeel that belies the mouthwatering level of acidity present to keep the wine focused and energetic. If you have enjoyed our one offering of Sauvignon Blanc over the years this will certainly continue to be right up your alley!

VINOUS 90 Points: PATRICIA GREEN Willamette Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2016. Brilliant straw-yellow. Pungent orange, pear and floral scents are complemented by white pepper and honey nuances that build in the glass. Juicy, dry and sharply focused, offering bitter orange pith and quince flavors that slowly flesh out and deepen on the back half. Spicy and smooth on the finish, which hangs on with very good, minerally tenacity. -- Josh Raynolds

2015 Durant Vineyard Chardonnay

This has a terrific combination of richness, texture, fruit and acidity. The aromatics combine golden delicious apples, waffles and a light nutty character. The wine definitely has a density of texture but it is nicely cut with bright acidity making it serious and deft all at the same time. Currently there doesn’t seem to be any “signature style” to the new thinking of Oregon Chardonnay but many producers are shooting for something in a Chablis-like genre. Most assuredly this is not that. However, it is not heavy handed or cloying. We think this is a really, really lovely first effort that is immensely enjoyable and (we think) should do well over a decent period of years. We think you won’t want to wait on it though.
