2014 Freedom Hill Vineyard Perspicacious Pinot Noir Magnum

2014 Freedom Hill Vineyard Perspicacious Pinot Noir Magnum
2014 Freedom Hill Vineyard Perspicacious Pinot Noir Magnum

The idea of making this wine came about when we signed on with Freedom Hill Vineyard in 2012. We felt that we might have found a vineyard that has the capacity to produce a wine with the depth, structure, minerality and complexity that we were looking for to showcase our belief in the ability to produce truly extraordinary Pinot Noirs here in Oregon. There are only three barrels of this wine made. This is one of the most special, distinct and amazing bottle of Pinot Noir we have produced.

In the Vinous.com review of 2014 Oregon Pinot Noirs, long-time Oregon reviewer Josh Raynolds, gave this wine the highest rating of the vintage as well as the highest rating he has ever given to a current release Oregon Pinot Noir:

95. Vibrant red. Extremely complex on the nose, displaying intense red berry, rose oil, Asian spice and botanical herb aromas; hints of smoky minerals and blood orange emerge slowly. Sappy, penetrating and pure, offering palate-staining raspberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that deepen and flesh out very slowly on the back half. Shows noteworthy focus and lift on a long, gently tannic finish that leaves behind notes of candied cherry and spicecake.”

This bottling comes entirely from a single fermenter of Dijon 115 Clone that was done with 100% whole clusters and pigeaged (someone getting into the fermenter as a replacement for pumping over or punching down) two times per day for the entire three week duration of the fermentation.

This wine kept building on itself during elevage, seemingly folding back in upon itself to gain further structure, depth, aromatics and complexity. There was no question that this was going to be bottled on its own as the star of our 2014 vintage, the only question was what to call this special wine. For those of you who know our history you probably have realized that if the wine ends in an -ious suffix (Notorious, Nefarious, Mysterious) then its definitely unique stuff. The definition of ‘perspicacious’ is having or showing an ability to notice and understand things that are difficult or not obvious.” That seemed to capture the spirit of this wine inimitably.

From the remarkable 2014 vintage comes the last Pinot Noir to be released and in the concept of saving the best for last we have lived up to that standard. This is not just a new label for us, it is a new standard and the most thought-provoking and unique wine to ever come from this cellar. Only 73 cases of this intense and age-worthy wine were produced and only 60 or so will be available for sale. This is your opportunity to secure your stash of this sensational Oregon Pinot Noir.
